From the InProduction 1.0 ReadMe:

The RIP has ultimate control of the settings it uses to image each page.
Almost any setting can be overridden by the RIP. We recommend you use
Host-Based separations if you are having trouble
getting the desired output from in-RIP separations.

This is a step in Adobe's swing to host-based color management (the same point is printed throughout the InDesign documentation). And the real news in Pshop6 and Illustrator9 is that the structure is now geared to managing color where you have full control over it.

The jungle drums speak of host-based color management in Acrobat 5. That isn't much of a surprise, given the implementations we have already seen.

But the interesting point is that Adobe is now forced to enter the color server market in competition with companies that have proven experience in implementing host-based color servers with full control of rendering intents. That should be interesting -:).

Note: I wonder about Adobe's certification scheme for InDesign. How many of Adobe's certifiers, and the certified companies they instruct, are aware of the complexities caused by host-based ICC versus in-RIP conversions, and how they may give different results.
