Although I haven't used ViewOpen, I recently upgraded to PrintOpen 4.0.
Indeed, there are marked improvements.

My favorite is full support of IT8.7/3 targets. In addition, there is a
vast improvement in the algorithms for computing profiles. In the past, we
had trouble with controlling shadow coverage --they came up either too
weak or way too heavy, depending on the rendering intent. Definitely worth
the investment.
