Dear List
Please forgive the length of this posting, but I just hope there is someone
out there who is sufficiently knowledgeable with Bestcolor RIP software to
help
on the problems I am trying to overcome.
I continue to suffer major frustrations with Best medium running through an
Epson 5000 now running on Win 2000. This is an ongoing saga that has been
dragging on for many months, and although I have had an ongoing
correspondence
and very many international phone calls to Best in Germany, has not been
resolved.
I still believe that the results from the Best/Epson 5000 combination to be
really excellent from results seen and from some results produced here,
otherwise this product would have chucked out by now.
As a photographer I want to be able to work in the following way. Send CMYK
images,
mostly out of PhotoShop to a Bestcolor queue with nesting enabled. This
would mean that
as we work, these images are automatically assembled one a sheet by Best,
and as each
sheet is filled it is processed and printed without any manual intervention.
Also on occasions we want to use a separate queue to send RGB images, again
out of PhotoShop.
Problem one with the above proposition is that there seems to be no way of
doing
this without getting a blank area beyond the actual image. This is of
course the minimum paper size that the printer driver allows one to select
in PhotoShop. This results in an A3 sheet can only take a much smaller
number of images than would otherwise be the case. Very wasteful and looks
pretty silly.
Ok there is a way round this, but is a nonsense of a work around and
involves the whole operation being carried out manually, thus defeating all
the production benefits that the queues should allow. This involves using a
manual search and printing through the Hold queue.
Problem two is with trying to send RGB images to a queue set up to receive
these. In other words, one that is set up with a Bestcolor supplied RGB
Reference profile. What always happens is that as soon as the file starts
to be processed, up comes an error message saying ICC profile describes the
wrong color space. However if we select an RGB file and run it through the
manual 'Hold' queue, there are no error messages and it prints out!
Finally! There is a facility for the printing out of file details and
printing settings on each proof sheet and also the inclusion of a control
strip. Whilst the details usually will print, the control strip usually
will not. It's not that this is not set up correctly, and interestingly
on version 3.04 of the software this worked even when printing on A5 proof
sheets! We are using the latest software, version 4.2 to take advantage of
all these super new features such as nesting and linearization.
Oh yes, we have tried all sorts of things such as setting up 'hot' folders
to
send images to PhotoShop, as suggested by Bestcolor support, but this
does not work because these cannot be seen in the print dialogue box in
PhotoShop.
My apologies for this being such as long posting. I would be greatly
relieved if there is someone out there who is using Bestcolor medium in the
way that we want to, and would be kind enough to help.
I should add that this software was purchased 14 months ago, and it is not
helped by the poor manual and a smattering of German in the
dialogue boxes. Also an online help facility that does not seem to work!
AND a UK supplier who is not prepared to provide telephone support for this
product, although Best expects their agents to do this!
Thanks for your indulgence
