I run a G4 Mac (OS 9.1) with a Samsung SyncMaster 750ST 17" monitor and know
nothing much yet about color management.
I scan negatives mainly (not many slides) on a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II.
Most of my work is either editing large photos in Photoshop and printing
them out at 11" x 16" on an Epson 1270, or web authoring (and most of my
site's visitor's are browsing on Windows machines).
I may do the occasional layout in Quark for a client needing a little DTP
which may be sent out to print, but that's very rare.
My main concern however, ie, my main need for colour management is matching
my monitor with the Epson photo output onto (usually) Premium Glossy paper.
I don't know exactly where to start. I've read a lot but can't find a step
by step guide anywhere. For the moment, I just need to know the logical
steps to a color managed system, so that at least I know that it's working
at an elementary level before I start tweaking it. l can fine tune and trim
it later when I get the feel of it, but for now, I just want to get off the
runway with everything in the right place.
One step at a time then, first question - Should I calibrate my monitor
using ColorSync or Adobe Gamma? Or both? (surely not). And I don't know my
monitor's phosphors, they're not given in its manual, so can, or should I
ignore the phosphors step? Thanks for any input,
Adam Nixon
