Yes, you can, or should be able to, especially on a Mac... all the startup
does is ensure that the most recent OptiCAL created profile is loaded to the
Video card. If you are not using the most recent OptiCAL profile as your
system profile (or monitor profile), or if you have another confilcting color
startup application, or some other such SNAFU, then that might explain your
results, but I often turn the startup off for assorted reasons, and things
are jsut fine without it.
