I'm new to this list so please be patient with my inadequate knowledge of

Would Monaco EZ Color or Wiziwyg or Adobe PressReady provide some
improvement? Is there a better, inexpensive RIP program out there? Are there
tutorials/books, etc. that could help me get started?
PressReady is probably the cheapest/easiest way to go. If you have
Photoshop 6, use the CMYK profiles that came with it for simulation
(US Offset Sheet, for example) rather than the ones with PR.
It will turn your printer into a fair comp-level proofer.
If you do not use the Epson papers, then you risk producing colors
different than the ones expected from the printer profiles. You can
get custom profiles built for different papers as well.
