Here are some of the topic discussion from the 12/3/01 meeting
Bringing in less educated people into the group, at this point, would cause
some confusion for them pertaining to color management. There are many
professionals who dont completely understand color management and ICC
technologies.
In order for ICC color management to be successful, we have to show that
this technology does work and share the success stories to entice the
graphic communication industry to get involved.
Bernard Furnival mentioned he was not able to locate a New York Times
profile until he contacted Eric Olesh. Should there be a common site to post
profiles for use?
Color issues for prepress professionals and clients:
Using the correct color space
Tagged files
Conversion using the correct profile
Another issues that was brought up was regarding preparing jobs months in
advance without knowing what press the job will be printed on.
Smaller clients and advertisers do not receive the benefit of training
regarding setting up color management systems and the theory behind it.
A topic of conversation regarding proofing was brought up. A problem with
color management is the cyan contamination in the yellow ink. It was
suggested by Bob Lyon to try a third party ink formulated to match specific
print processes. The ink is manufactured by Lysom inks.
In order to bring the forum to a professional level we need to have an
agenda.
Agenda possibilities:
Dealing with legacy files
Workflows
OS 10
Proofing
We need an agenda to build momentum for the group to succeed.
What would we utilize our time for?
Exchange of knowledge
Communication
Ability to use color management to increase revenue and sales
Standardization issues
Printers do not want cooperate and print to standards for the fear of losing
their competitive advantage.
Standardization is needed be able to produce accurate and repeatable color
reproductions, regardless of where the job is printed.
Specifications for Newspaper Advertising Printing (SNAP)
General Requirements for Commercial Offset Lithography (GRACOL)
Specifications for Web Offset Printing (SWOP)
Next meeting
The next meeting has to be decided upon.
All exchanges of information are encouraged; so if anyone has PDFs or other
file that would help, please email them.
