If you generate CMY profiles, how do you get the correct density of black
It's a CMYK RIP, use CMYK destination/paper profiles.

Well, no. In fact I start the black at anywhere from 40-60% depending on the
particular inkjet printer I'm dealing with.

The Kodak colorflow software lets you set the black start at 85, but again

this is too early.
Assuming your black is going to the maximum of 100%, wouldn't this be a
rather extreme curve to ask of the profiling software, that is, to go from
0% to 100% in the span of 15% (85-100)? To me, the main criteria for the
black curve is to keep it out of flesh tones in particular. Even a start
point as early as 40% is usually enough to accomplish this and creates a
smoother black curve in the process.
