Hello;
We've discovered what appears to be a bug in PS 6, and I'm posting it here
for further evaluation. Here's how it works:
1. Open new PS document and apply a 'rainbow' gradient across the image
(just to simulate an image with a broad range of colors).
2. Open Levels and look at the histogram - note it's condition.
3. Open Curves and apply a typical 'S' shaped curve.
4. Open Levels and look at the histogram - it should now look fractured, as
if every other level has been removed.
5. Save the image.
6. Open the image in PS 5.5, open Levels and look at the histogram - it
should now appear differently than in PS 6 (it should look fully intact).
We have noticed this 'problem' on raw scans from Newcolor 7000 and on a
variety of imaged created in Photoshop. We are curious to see if others can
recreate this situation. Is this just a problem with the way PS 6 renders
the histogram or is PS 6 actually seeing the file differently?
Adobe is aware of this situation, but their official position is that this
is 'normal' behavior for PS 6. Furthermore, according to Adobe, images
created in PS 6 are not compatible with PS 5.5 (and vice versa) because of
the different ways that the two programs interpret color (disturbing!!)
Any thoughts? BTW, we aren't satisfied with Adobe's take on this situation
and we'll be digging further to see if we can find the root problem. Thanks.
