In addition to other responses on this thread regarding cache etc...

be aware that the histogram you see in levels is a composite of the three
channels. The graph is roughly the same as if you laid each separate
channels histogram on top of each other. Its not the same as looking at a
luminance histogram with the histogram command. So its possible to have
fractured individual channels while the composite still looks smooth. Its
also possible for the composite histogram to show a full range of tones from
0-255 even though the true luminance range of the image might be far less.
As long as only one channel has values that go to 0 and another has values
that go to 255 the composite looks like a full histogram. This can be
deceiving. To me the RGB or CMYK composite histogram in levels is of little
use.
