Here's a new puzzle for the new year...
After switching over to PS6 and setting it up according to Andrew
Rodney's explanations, I decided to try proofing thru RGB printer
profiles on my screen. And now I am thoroughly confused by the
"proofing" results in PS6!
The closest match between my screen image and the actual print is
with "Proof Colors" OFF !!
Choosing "Perceptual" as the intent in "Proof Setup" results in an
awful screen image -- too dark and too saturated as compared to the
paper print. Choosing "Simulate Paper White" along with "Perceptual"
only makes it worse in this direction.
The only 3 settings in "Proof Setup" that come close to matching the
paper print (but not quite as well as turning off the "Proof Colors"
menu item) are these:
1) intent = absolute, "Simulate Paper White" ON
2) intent = relative colorimetric, "Simulate Paper White" OFF
3) intent = saturation, "Simulate Paper White" OFF
The above 3 look pretty much the same. I used the "New View" with
"Proof Setup" custom settings to dsplay them all at once in separate
windows.
No other combination works, and especially "intent = perceptual" is
AWFUL regardless of "Simulate Paper White" ON or OFF.
For this test I used my own CompassProfile custom profile for the
Epson EX. For some reason, if I choose the canned Epson profile I
can't control the "Simulate Paper White" button in "Proof Setup"
(it's grayed out, regardless of intent chosen) -- but with Epson's
canned profile the screen images are way off for ALL intents,
including perceptual.
Just for kicks, I ran ProfileFirstAid and it reported no problems.
So -- what am I doing wrong on this first day of the new year??

Post Scriptum -- Andrew Rodney's info at thedigitaldog is great, but
on my Mac the imaginginsider site's fonts are so small as to make the
articles there impossible to read -- and I can't get Netscape 4.72 to
override the original font sizes on this site.
