David--
I've installed OS 9.1 on four machines now (a G4, a beige G3, a firewire
PowerBook, and my son's iBook). On my two desktop machines I'm not seeing
either the monitor resolution problems or the missing monitor profile issue
(mine is also made with Optical) you describe, so I don't think that the
problem is endemic to all 9.1 installations. On my G4 with a Radius
Pressview XL and the standard ATI graphics card, my top resolution is
1920X1440. When presented with bizarre issues like yours, I'm a great fan
of www.macfixit.com; I don't think I've ever had a problem that someone else
hasn't reported -- and solved --first.
A few random 9.1 thoughts:
1. A few days ago I inquired on this list about ColorSync 3.0.3; John Gnaegy
of Apple responded that there was no room on the download version to include
the ColorSync update (after all, the download is only 70MB), but that
ColorSync 3.0.3 is on the CD-ROM version. If you review the macfixit site,
you'll find a link to a site from which you can download ColorSync 3.0.3;
since I don't know whether the site is Apple-approved, I will refrain from
posting the URL here.
2. I did encounter the "Big Morsels" problem in installing OS 9.1 on two of
my machines. The cause apparently has something to do with the absolute size
of your system folder; the solution is to drag some non-Apple extensions
etc out of the folder temporarily. Macfixit again discusses the issue.
3. I've not encountered any conflicts since installing OS 9.1, except for
one control strip module (OT/PPP). My recollection from some of the forums
is that some people have been having problems with DreamWeaver, in
particular, but I don't use that application.
4. OS 9.1 updates an awful lot of extensions, etc. So far, I would describe
it as very stable. Most important, any function in the Finder is much much
faster: the computer feels like someone's bolted on a little turbocharger.
I'm sorry I can't offer a more specific suggestion on your monitor
resolution questions, but my limited experience suggests to me that the
problems are not inescapable.

When I go back to 9.0.4 all is well so the problem lies in 9.1. Any
