Hello Tom,
As another "lightweight" on the list, I'll offer my own experience. I
suggest that you look into one of the various monitor/printer profiling
packages that use a device to read your monitor. (Colorvision, Monaco, etc.)
First of all, I was surprised as to how far off my monitor really was using
Adobe Gamma. It was better than when I opened the box and plugged it in the
first time, but it was not really neutral. I bought the Colorvision product,
and I now recalibrate my Sony monitor every 10 to 14 days. It does make a
difference!
I also bought the Profile RGB program from them as part of the package to
build profiles with third party inks (Lyson Fotonic) but I built my first
one using the OEM Epson ink in one of my Photo 1200's printing on Epson
Archival Matte paper. Using the Epson drivers, my prints ran red and over
saturated. Using the profile I built (it did take a few tries to tweak it)
with Profile RGB, I have prints that more closely match my monitor.
There are more powerful (and more expensive) solutions to profiling out
there, but I can't afford them, frankly. What I bought was in my budget, and
my work is better off with it than without it.
