I ran a test simulation of 3 documents with a variety of color fabric scans
(around 40 total) on a Xerox DocuColor 12 with the Imation RIP, a Splash
G620 Server Station, and an EFI RIP (don't remember the model) and compared
the results a while back. We were trying to simulate a Matchprint, so I
expected the Imation silver beast to perform a little better. The costs of
all 3 were pretty comparable, at least from the Xerox center I was working
with.
Anyway, the Imation did not perform better; it actually consistently
introduced moires in areas the others did not. We output the files numerous
times and the results were consistent. Other than the moires, I'd say the
color matching was fairly comparable; I did find the Splash interface more
intuitive, being a Mac user. The Imation RIP felt a little version 1.0ish,
and EFI is EFI. (Side note: all EFI RIPs selling these days allow input,
simulation, AND output profiles, so let's put that complaint to rest!)
BIG NOTE: the Imation allows users to use a Matchprintish stock, which I did
not use in my test, because I was testing it for use in a situation where my
client would not be using it. This may be the most important feature people
will want from the Imation RIP, so remember that it wasn't part of my
experience.
And understand my sample output was small, that I took no objective
measurements, and that there are numerous other potential factors here, as
usual. I'd be interested in hearing other people's experiences as well to
see if mine was idiosyncratic.
