If, as you say, you're scanner color space is larger than your working
space or or print space, What do you think happens to those colors that
your scanner produces that are outside the limits of Adobe 98? When you
open up an untagged scan file into A98 those colors will be clipped.
However, if your file was tagged with it's own profile, the out-of-gamut
colors would be remapped into your working space.
Even if your scanner software cannot embed an ICC profile, you can do so
with a simple ColorSync script. You will, however, need to have a good
profile for your scanner.
