I tried doing this on Friday afternoon -- but you know how it is, we've been
using this set-up for 2 years and relied on service interval calibration
only which has been OK for Cromalin matching up until now.
All of a sudden the colours drift and we spend the afternoon hunting down
manuals, PDFs and trying to recall how the Du Pont engineer had shown us to
work the software 2 years previously :-(
Meanwhile all of the Macs have gone from G3 to G4 and the software has gone
from OS 8 to OS 9.1. Du Pont no longer support the EFI rip and OS 9.1 won't
run the Java software properly.
I can build a profile for use from Photoshop (which is OK for me) but don't
think this will work for the other guys here who need to run their proofs
from XPress.
I'm just about to set off for the office for another hack at the problem. I
can see myself having to waste time setting up an old beige G3 on OS 8.5 and
loading the original software again.

This makes the upgrade decision difficult for me.
Our businesses is divided between raw images and images that are in page
layouts (99% XPress).
The EFI/Epson5000 combination gives/gave us a near perfect match to Cromalin
and was therefore perfect for proofing images in layouts (we have analogue
Cromalin here also).
The Best/Epson5000 combination should also be able to match Cromalin and
give us the ability to control colour on a larger variety of paper stocks
etc.
However, does the Best/Epson5000 produce a decent proof of a raw image? The
EFI/Epson5000 certainly does not.
Shadows areas are a real problem -- nasty, gritty quantized skin and
clothing etc -- not very attractive for the majority of photographers we
work with as they are predominantly working in fashion and beauty.
Interestingly, the best results that I have seen from an Epson5000 have been
using the Du Pont Photographers system. Du Pont have produced a drag and
drop interface that appears to use the basic Epson software RIP to get the
images to the 5000.
Why can't the EFI or the Best rips get close to the shadow quality of the
Photographers Proofer?
