When we had a similar problem (originally thinking that there was
something
wrong with our Epson 2000P) we finally found out that until Photoshop
hit
version 6.01 (not 6.0) it could not support color management output to a
desktop printer.
It was very weird, every once in a while our files would print properly,
but it was totally unpredictable. Our solution is to output via Quark
(after saving in Photoshop), using the embedded profile setting in
Quark.
It's a pain in the neck, but it works. Also, we found that not everyone
has this problem...Sort of like metamerism, but when it happens, it's a
problem.
I should point out that we first had PS 5.0, then upgraded to 5.5...both
showed the problem. (Mac G4, OS9)
I don't know what problem you had, but the related code is unchanged
from Photoshop 5.0.1 to 6.0.1.
5.0 did have a small bug in the "printer color management" code.
And for desktop printers, you shouldn't be letting the driver do ANY
color conversions - do the conversion in Photoshop and disable all
printer color adjustment.
