Gain works from the lightest colors down with diminishing effect, bias works
from the darkest colors up with diminishing effects towards the light tones.
Traditional logic has been to set bias once (if that) and leave it alone,
then to balance your gain with a precalibration utility as often as necessary
to maintain neutral grays. If devices read dark tones better, it might prove
valuable to correct bias on a similar basis. Few monitors have bias front
panel controls so it has been largely the specialized self calibrating
systems (the Barco, PressView type of systems) that have done much with that
to date. But with Direct Digital Control of monitors becoming a reality, it
may become more common soon.
