Without knowing more about the software and files you're using, this
question is a bit difficult to answer. Your reference to GCR/UCR leads me to
believe you are trying to do this through PhotoShop's CMYK setup. If so, you
may get the results you want by setting Black Generation to "Maximum,"
depending on the types of files you are dealing with. This works well when
converting some RGB images (such as infographics) with black (RGB black,
anyway!) text on them to CMYK. However, converting RGB photos to CMYK with
Black Generation maxed on many presses will result in overly dark photos
(mostly due to pressmen trying to get darker black text elsewhere on the
page). You may have better luck working in CMYK and adjusting/adding black
ink manually (whether through a toning process or in the image creation
process) rather than counting on the CMYK conversion to do it for you.
Good luck,
