I will probably be subjected to howls of protest - but please read Dan
Margulis "Professional Photoshop". I believe you will find it enlightening.
Dan believes you need that K. 'Nuff said, read the book.
As for profiles try comparing your home grown profiles to ones created by
Andrew Rodney - the DigitalDog and Steve Upton at Chromix. They know stuff
we don't know! In the long run it may be faster easier cheaper than rolling
your own.
