Friends
I've followed the thread on metamerism and what seems to
generally considered a common misuse of the term when referring
to printed work with a great deal of interest. It certainly has
some effects which are important to us all.
Looks like we need a new word to describe the symptom where a
print from, say, an Epson 2000P, changes in colour balance under
different lights. This is not the overall change which one would
expect but the way in which - for example a gray wedge will gain
different colour castes in areas of differing density.
It seems to be a "feature" of the newer Epsons with their
[encapsulated pigment?] ink sets and other than the 10000 [which
is said to be better because of different UCR / GCR] it seems to
almost rule out the use of 2000P, 5500, 7500 & 9500, in
production of prints for display under varying illumination.
So it looks like we shouldn't call it metamerism - but what
then should we call it?
Someone did make a good point though.
If we print a gray scale wedge to a Lightjet and same to a 2000P
then compare the two resulting prints under differing
illuminations we observe that although they may appear similar in
a light box, they behave quite differently under different
lightings. [in as much as the Lightjet's colour balance within
the image is claimed to not change but the 2000 P [Archival
matte] certainly does]. Is this not a form of metamerism after
all - since we are now comparing two objects which seems to be
the point.
And even if we did not actually have the Lightjet reference
image on hand would we not be subconsciously comparing the 2000P
print to an idealized "perfect print" with no adverse castes? So
is that "virtual or subconscious metamerism"?
thanks
