The Richter Scale is exponential so those little decimal points mean huge
differences a 6.2 upgraded to a 7.0 is actually 800,000 time more shake
rattle and roll which is why the destructive difference between a 7 and 8
is the difference between some broken glass and an apocalyptic event.
An 8 is a million times more shake than a seven, a 9 a billion more times
then an 8.

Preston responds:
Actually the Richter Scale is logarithmic in scale rather than exponential.
As such, a 7.0 quake has ten times the power of a 6.0 quake. If my
calculator is correct, a 6.8 quake is 6.3 times stronger than a 6.0 one.
