We have found that pigmented inks are very metameric.

Surely, you mean "Epson pigmented inks?"

Several vendors have been very successful with pigmented inks before Epson "invented" them (sort of like how Microsoft "invented" windowed computing... :-)

In my experience, metamerism depends a lot on the substrate. Using Roland's Hexachrome pigmented ink set, the ONLY time I experience metamerism is with one particular paper -- their cheapest semi-gloss paper changes colors in certain lighting.

Roland's high-end watercolor paper, high-gloss film, backlit film, and even sign/banner material have shown NO metamerism in my use. This includes a 48"x118" Tyvek banner that has been displayed at art shows throughout the region in direct sunlight, incandescent light, florescent light, etc.

Epson and Microsoft seem to have very similar relationships with their customer base:

Q: "How does a 500-pound guerilla treat its customers?"
A: "Any way it wants to..." :-)

But that doesn't mean there are no other vendors out there. Sometimes, going with the "market leader" means taking whatever crap they dish out to you.
