One IT8 target manufacturer for all film types

In response to the discussion that grew out the "where to buy IT8" thread.

It is always best if you can build a profile for the film type you are scanning. This is why Agfa targets are so popular in Europe and Kodak here. To go one step further it is always best to scan with a reference file that you measured instead of the batch file from the manufacturer.

That being said, it is not really a possibility to do so as there is no target for all the film types and most of us have no way of measuring a transmissive target. Fuji blues for example are enough different then Kodak that it may ("MAY") pay to invest in a Fuji target if you scan mostly Fuji film.

In my graphic arts experience (10 years running traditional high-end scanners) I had a set-up for each film type scanned. This same approach can be taken with good success using color management. A profile can be optimized for a film type other then the one it was built from with a set of edits. If you have a profile editing application these can be saved into the source profile and used again with out the need to edit. If not save the edits as an action in Photoshop to be applied when that film type is scanned.

Rgs,
Dan
