Hey darrin,
it is possible to get the correct screen data with an 600 or 720 dpi
InkjetPrinter. We show this solution at CeBit and it is called BEST Screen
Proof. This solution will use the original 1-Bit Datafile from the
Imagesetter RIP and we use this information directly without any
descreening. So you have an proof with every information inside. For more
information please contact our productmanagement.

It has a RIP, is Colorsync compatible but there are some important
differences. You can find more information at www.colorproof.de.

Yes, this is an important aspect in a contract proof. If you use the
same
RIP'ed data, you will have the overprint/knockout options, trapping,
etc.,
as well as avoid nasty surpises with fonts, etc. in your proof - which
can
happen if you send a different PS file for proofing. Keep in mind,
however,
that this is rasterized and not screened data (you will not get a screen
simulation) - until inkjet printers can print at 2400, this will not be
possible.
Regards.
