This is a corelary to the point I was making that you wouldn't get past the
initital settings portion of the program if you had ambient light issues...

Thats not beyond the realm of possibility; but if it was the Spyder, why
would it work fine on the monitor of the person you are borrowing it from?
The Spyder is solid state, if its not going to work it should be quite
democratic about it, and not work for anybody!
On the other hand, if your monitor has seen more than three years of full
time use, I would refuse to even come in and attempt to calibrate it for you,
to avoid wasting my time and your money... a wide range of affordable
monitors can now be used for color critical work (CRT monitors that is!) but
in bringing the standard down from a few Barcos and PressViews to a much more
open mix, the general public now often assumes that any old mutt monitor, of
any age, should be calibratable. Not quite true...
