If you can get that colorspace above consistent from scan to scan, you can
profile it. I wouldn't want to do this if I could only deal with 8 bits pre
color final scan and certainly not if the scanner is funneling the color
into some Working Space in the first place (like god forbid sRGB which lower
end scanners do).

First you need to Assign the scanner profile then convert to the Working
Space.
