No no and no to generic CMYK. These are unity profiles put and created and
necessary for internal reasons. They should in no case be used for
separations. Use a proofer space or say a saved out profile created in
Photoshop with the press characteristics. Swop is a bit light for such paper
stock.

You're not calibrated correctly and or not applying a normalised ICC
workflow.

It's at the end of it's correct color life. It could still produce
reasonable results. Color correction and color management has always been a
large topic with so many hours of studying the issues before applying the
tools at hand to get the desired results. ICC doesn't change this at all,
only makes it portable and open. If you can invest in a little in color
consulting the ROI is incredible in your situation. CD Tobie is in your side
and others. I believe Don Hutchenson is putting together a book that will
outline the workflow between applications that should cover your situation
as far as background can go. You can meander thru ICC color management for
years or have it done for you in one day and have it working correctly.
