It's very old dye sub technology made for proofing in the old days when
people didn't have the ability (or trust) to use ICC profiles and a good old
Epson ink jet. The cost per print is going to be very high. The very old
Kodak dye sub tabloids used CAPs (Color Application Profiles) which are not
ICC profiles but act very much like them. I think the newer DCP's used ICC
profiles but I'd check. The upside is the printer will produce very stable
color right after the print comes out of the unit and remain that way
(unlike many ink jets that require dry down). The downside is that the price
per print will be quite high and you can't assume you'll be able to get
media for the unit years from now (I'm pretty sure the DCP9000 and latter
printers are discontinued). With today's ink jets and ICC technology, I'd be
cautious with this kind of printer.
