I knew someone was going to point this out. Radius did replace it.
Twice. The first time they hot-swapped it with a refurb (it was beyond
the 90 day grace period), but that unit was a mess. Never mind the
brightness, it had convergence problems all over the screen. The second
swap was for another new unit, but it was essential the same as the
first, declining in luminance over a period of a few months.
At that point, I gave up and lived with what they sent. PressViews are
stamped with a production date on the back of the case, and all of the
ones I received were made in December of 1996. A fellow at Radius tech
was nice enough to check the production dates of their PV/SR inventories,
and they too were all 12/96. It seems that Mitzu must have made a pile
of them at once, and since they were moving to the XL, this must have
been the last production run.
So the moral of the story is: always pick your monitor from the back of
the shelf so you get a fresh one. You can't just tell by smell and
squeezing alone.
