As an aside, some other factors to consider are voltage levels and signal
integrity from the graphics adapter. A monitor that doesn't get enough
signal will appear weak.
Sometimes in older gear (mid 90s) the monitor or graphics adapter has
settings that select an input voltage sensitivity (e.g., Mitsu 91TXM 21" and
clones). When set incorrectly, the display will be dim. I haven't see this
control in later designs.
A graphics card setting that used to cause me problems was a sync-on-green
control--as opposed to whatever other kind of sync, I don't know--which when
set incorrectly would make the green channel overly hot.
