Despite the objections of the technically minded, we are witnessing the
development of a new meaning, or perhaps a couple of new meanings, for an
existing term. Popular language grows and changes at a rate far exceeding
scientific terminology, where a single defined meaning is paramount. What is
most interesting here is to see color science terms incorporated in to
general usage; much the way aviation terminology became common language
nearly a century ago. I have an old dictionary which proudly proclaims that
it is modern and up-to-date, containing all the important new aviation terms
and their meanings. I don't expect the next Websters to define metamerism in
terms of inkjet prints, or distinguish between archival paper, and archival
prints on that paper... but there is a broader public taking interest in
these issues then previously!
