Sam,
For one thing I've never heard of the serial port needing shutdown for
plugging. SCSI of course, but serial? I plug and unplug serial devices at
any time on both Windows and Mac platforms.
That said, I doubt the file format would have anything to do with
SpectroFiler, since that device is very specialized and it's not one of the
supported measuring devices in BestColor (as far as I know, 4.2.3).
Maybe it's based on the SpectroLino/Spectroscan format, but then, that's
supposedly an "ANSI/IT" format. That means its formating (columns,
delimiters, etc.) conforms to certain rules; that doesn't mean it's contents
are those from an IT8 target.
Which device will you be reading from?
If it's supported by 4.2.3, by all means I would just plug its serial cable
onto the machine, hot or not.
IF you're still reluctant to do so, knowing which device it is, will help in
proposing a conversion method between it's exported file format and whatever
(haven't looked yet) BestColor needs as input. In most cases an Excel
template will do the trick.
