I have written a Mac program to do this that I can e-mail you, if you're
interested (contact me off-list). It works for both 8-bit and 16-bit
images. For 16-bit images, it reports the actual number of 16-bit levels
and does not hide behind an 8-bit curtain like Photoshop's handling of
16-bit histograms. It works for grayscale, RGB, CMYK, Lab and Photo CD
images and accepts most image file formats (but not native Photoshop format
nor LZW compressed images).
