Two additional things about my level counting program that I forgot to
mention:

a) It is free.

b) For 3-channel, 8-bit images (RGB, Lab and PhotoCD) it also reports the
number of unique colors present in the image, out of a maximum possible 16+
million. This is a very interesting number to watch as you pass an image
through profiles or do mode changes to/from Lab.
