If this problem persists I am thinking of trying a PCI serial adapter if
there is such a beast. Any ideas there, I am getting a little desperate
here. Still down and a job needs to get done. Typical.
Nick
Hi there,
I am Udo J.Machiels and my suggestion in solving Mac problems sounds maybe
stupid, but I still do it nearly twice a year.
Every time when my Mac starts to have funny hiccup's , I first try to find
out what is wrong, but if I start to loose more than half a day I simply
give up and don't want to bother anymore.
And Nick, if you are so desperate, than I think there is no other solution
left over than to try what I am doing twice a year and that is completely
reinstalling all my software!
Not only that. I have partitioned my HD (I have 2 HD's together 100 Gig.)
On one of those partitions I have just my operating system and software. No
documents.
I completely erase it all. Just like cleaning in the spring time..
Everything out! Take my CD ROM with Mac Os 9.1. install, etc. and than:
I just try to install as much as possible software (with Extension manager
in the control panels set in MacOS base and nothing more, or copy it and
turn off File sharing as well) Usually I can have a go with most of my
software from Adobe with just installing and not restarting the Machine,
because I click continue (and than click quit) for installing more
software. In case a software program forces me to restart than restart and
don't hold down the space bar!!! Let the machine do a completely start-up.
Go back to the extension manager after the restart and turn MacOs base on
again. (This will switch off the extensions from the last installed
software) And restart again.. It's a hassle I know, but I don't use the
facility of pushing down the space bar during first start-up after an
installation process, because for some mysterious reasons, what I wanted was
not happening perfect.. Apple would deny there and say there is no
difference, but I know there is.. The system is not perfect as it should be!
So always switch off all extensions during installation and any Virus
protection and File sharing.
let programs from Microsoft (Outlook, Explorer and Office) have their first
run before restart! If I don't than they cause a lot of trouble!
If you would not have done that than after restart and all extensions on,
those programs will install additional software with all extensions on from
other applications and that will do no good at all!!!!
I did get very experienced in this process and I tell you, my Mac run's
really fantastic!
I had to find out, because just after I bought my Mac G 4 I had on and on
problems. ( I just converted from PC to Mac and my first experience was
that the first start up was not going OK and with the second I just got a
grey monitor screen and nothing more, can you imagine! Just converted from
PC to Mac!
But really, many problems are just solved by itself and because you are so
desperate: go and do it. (You see anyway the same piece of kit works with
one person and not the other, without clear reasons sometimes!)
And computers are like many other things: they don't stay new, so refresh
them!
(No partitions? Than make as quickly as you can a back-up!)
Maybe everybody knows this, but at least I simply try to help.
It works for me, although my procedure sounds more complicate than needed.
(And I tell you, I've got a lot of heavy Pro software on my machine and I do
now love my Mac and hate PC's!)
Before I forget: Never start-up with the Keyspan serial to USB adapter
plugged in: It's just making chaos. Plug it in after having started up your
machine, not before. (This is what Keyspan is actually telling us on their
website!)
Greetings,
Udo J. Machiels
(Please tell me if it worked!)
