For your purposes (RGB printing direct out of Photoshop), ProfileMaker would
be a bit overkill. The Eye-One Match package would give you great RGB
profiles (and CMYK for that matter) that are the equal of ProfileMaker since
it is essentially the same software.

You'll be very hard pressed to get better dithering results and color
accuracy using a RIP. The main advantage a RIP gives you is the ability to
print Postscript out of other applications plus using embedded EPS graphics
placed in page layout apps. A RIP is usually meant for printing "pages" as
opposed to strictly images. Having said that, certain RIPs (I'm thinking of
BestColor mostly) give you some great calibration/linearization tools plus
give you the means of coming up with your own "media settings" (ink limits
mainly) for non-Epson papers. If you want to get that last bit of color
gamut out of your printer and/or want to use "non-standard" papers, then a
RIP is what you need. Just be warned that getting that last 10-20% out of
the printer using a good RIP is 100% more work (and cost)! You decide
whether it's worth it or not. And if you go this route (CMYK PS RIP) you'll
likely need the extra CMYK profile control that a good high-end profiling
app like ProfileMaker can give you.
Just my $.02
