I've had the "Enable Async I/O" plug-in running on my G4/V8 with no
problems with the dual processors. Whether it is still needed is another
question. Here's what Adobe has to say out Enable Async I/O:
----------------------------------
Use of asynchronous file handling improves performance of both file
reading and writing as well as Photoshop scratch disk usage on Power
Macintosh. machines running MacOS 7.5.1 or later with SCSI manager
4.3.1). The extension will not affect performance on other systems.
Users of older third-party disk drivers may encounter disk-related
problems with this extension enabled. If you do encounter disk-related
problems, disable the extension and contact the manufacturer of your disk
drivers for updates.
To disable asynchronous file handling for Adobe Photoshop, locate the
Enable Async I/O folder inside the Extensions folder in your Plug-ins
folder. Add a "~" character before the name of the Enable Async I/O
folder. Asynchronous file handling will be disabled when you restart
Adobe Photoshop.
To ensure that this extension operates effectively, do the following:
Update to the latest drivers available for your hard drive. For Apple.
drives you should update the drivers with Apple Drive Setup 1.0.5 or
later. For other drives, contact the drive manufacturer or the supplier
of your driver.
Make sure that you aren't running any extensions that may disable
asynchronous file transfers. Some disk compression, caching, and RAM
expansion utilities may disable asynchronous I/O.
Install MacOS 7.5.1 or later on your system.
If you have external SCSI devices plugged in, check your SCSI cables.
Make sure that they are connected tightly, of good quality, and that your
SCSI chain is properly terminated. Adobe Systems recommends that you use
an active terminator, such as SCSI Sentry from APS Technologies.
------------------------------------
I haven't seen "SCSI Manager" in the System for a long time, and SCSI
drives have been replaced by the ubiquitous ATA's, so maybe "Enable Async
I/O" is of no use anyway.
