It is possible to preserve K even in an ICC-based workflow. There are
K-preserving CMMs like the Imation CFM and others that build a K-preserving
device link on the fly based on standard output profiles. The RIP that comes
with our own DesignJet 50ps
(
http://www.designjet.hp.com/Fall2001/10ps20ps50ps_overview.html) also has
various K-related options. So don't despair yet. For sure it is not the most
common of workflows though. You also have to keep in mind that proofer K is
not necessarily the same as press K, in terms of optical density (higher)
and even color (strange as that may sound; more or less neutral).
