Ray,
There are two or three philosophies about scanning with profiles. I
subscribe to the one where you set the white and black point with known
target values for every image, to bring it into line with your output
process. IHMO, if you are thinking that the profile will do all of the work
for you then you might have the wrong expectation.
If you are scanning the same type of images that were shot at the same time,
on the same film and processed at the same time, then profile editing might
be a reasonable option. But if you have a lot of different types of images
with different white and black points, then profile editing would not be as
practical as setting white and black points once you have scanned the image
assigned the profile and then converted to your RGB working space.
