Hi Cathy
I'll have a stab and see if I can make some sense ?
Step 1.
Calibrate and profile your monitor, this profile will become your monitor
setting at a system level. Colour managed applications such as photoshop will
use this as a reference point to define their own device independent colour
space and non colour managed applications such as dreamweaver or flash will
simply display colour as the profile dictates without question.
Step 2.
Profile your scanner, when you bring your scan in to photoshop apply your
scanner profile to correct your scanners colour bias and then convert to your
RGB work space to do your image adjustements. Adobe RGB 1998 is a good starting
point and is used by all the pre press default settings. This abstract work
space is well aware of your monitor profile and uses it to create an ideal
colour space to work in.
Step 3.
Profile your printer, once you have edited your image to the point you wish to
print convert it to your printer profile and hit print. Be sure to also save
your master file in the work space and print a converted copy not your only
copy. You can convert your image by going image> Mode> convert to profile> or
by going file> print with preview> and selecting your printer profile as your
print space (relative colormetric is a good default intent for now)
Conclusion.
Think of your device profiles (scanner, monitor and printer) as filters that
colour correct each device to a known standard. Think or your working space,
abstract profile as a perfect colour world free from the limitations of any
human made piece of hardware that tries to reproduce colour.
I hope this helps,
PS: I learned most of what I know from David Blatners and Bruce Frasers
fantastic book "Real World Photoshop 6"
Good Luck !
