Joseph - I'll agree with Jan-Willem in that most designers aren't going to
want to deal with color managing (or paying for color management) their
devices. At the very least you might be able to talk them into purchasing
some basic monitor calibration hardware/software (it is so affordable now)
so at least that is taken care of. I think it has gotten easy enough even
for the most technically challenged designer to be able to do it
themselves. You could also help educate them and at least set up their
Photoshop color settings properly. As far as profiling their inkjets, this
is hard enough to do with a machine sitting right across the room, never
mind one several hundred miles away!
As far as licensing issues go, I don't think you'd be in violation if you
were to create printer profiles for remote clients. All of those color
management consultants would be in big trouble if they had to pay licensing
for every printer they profiled! I also agree with the idea to just get
your own Epson 5500 (or a new 2200!) with a decent RIP like Best or
ColorByte. This is proof of the quality of your photography and does not
rely on the quality of your client's equipment, or their knowledge of color
management. You can also look into various remote profiling services (like
Chromix ).
