I have looked into Xerox printers myself in the past, for proofing, like the
Phaser 7700. And the only response I came up with was that a) I either live
with the Fiery Adobe PS3 RIP inside that machine or b) stay away from that
printer altogether. I think the consensus on this List is option b.
As far as I know, the 7700 does not directly give a client application
*true* access to the quantity of toner deposited on the sheet -- like a BEST
RIP or other RIPs would. IMHO, color information processed by a Phaser 7700
always gets transformed one way or another, unpredictably, by the Fiery
engine that lives inside that printer, whether RGB or CMYK, through what's
known as PostScript Color management. (Please others on the list correct me
if I am wrong). If that's the case, any efforts to profile this printer
could only be met with limited success as you would be trying to profile
another 'profile', essentially. All desktop color laser printer that I know
work this way. That is one reason everybody is staying away from them for
color critical work.
Anyone buying this printer is at the mercy of the Fiery engine and the
results are not manageable, IMHO. If you are stuck with the printer, you
will have to live with its CMYK 'SWOP' simulation as I don't think it's
possible to completely disable any conversion of the color data inside the
printer through the driver.
Oh! one more thing. There is this business of the PhaserMatch software that
comes bundled with the 7700. But, from Chris Murphy's account (see elsewhere
on the List), it isn't worth the pain.
Try talking to XEROX pre-sales for further support on this printer.
I would consider an EPSON or HP inkjet printer (not the 20ps!) instead if I
was you. Look for the new EPSON 2200. Sounds very promising.
