My answer, of course, is in the context of the question: a
SpectroLino. Thus said "either take density readings
directly or..."
Also note the new beasts "spectrodensitometers",
densitometers that are in fact spectrophotometers with
built-in conversion (response) curves. They exist for two
reasons, one is the ability to switch between different
density standards (status), and the other because they are
supposed to be more precise than standard (physically
filtered) densitometers.
