We have two Epson 8500's which we have been very pleased with. One of them
is driven by the BEST Rip and this gives excellent colour.
Needing a 3rd machine, we have recently trialled both the Oki 9500 and the
new Epson 8600. Although the Oki is fast in terms of ppm once the file is
ripped, it is interesting to note that the Epson 8600 is actually faster in
delivering the first page (apart from colour accuracy, our main concern).
Although very similar to look at, Epson have obviously made significant
improvements between the 8500 and the 8600 and the 8600 is a much-improved
machine.
Based on the technical specs of the Oki, we had high hopes but in the end
were disappointed with overall performance. On balance, the Epson 8600 was
just as fast in real-world performance, colour through the onboard Rip was
better and it was slightly cheaper. We took the 8600 and returned the Oki.
For my money, there's nothing that can beat the Epsons - especially when
paired with a BEST Rip.
Now..... when are Xerox going to make friends with BEST ? - a DC12 driven
by the BEST would be fabulous!

One university where I teach is about to retire its Tek780.
Is there a consensus about a desktop color laser printer that's truly ICC
friendly for under $10K?
My dream machine is some Xerox with a BEST color RIP inside. (hey, xmas is
just around the block -- it's time of never to ask!)
Anyone seen the Canons? Or can say anything (good) about the HP's?
