I was wondering if someone could describe the interaction between the Adobe
ACE color engine, built into Photoshop, and the computer operating system?
More specifically, I am wondering how a color space in Photoshop is mapped
to the monitor output when a monitor profile is assigned and Adobe ACE is
specified as the color engine in Photoshop. I am also wondering if there
are any differences in how this process works between a Mac and PC.
I am a fine art photographer doing color critical work. My current digital
setup includes a PC running Windows 2000, a ColorVision Spyder with
Optical, and a Mitsubishi DP2060 monitor. Whenever I mention to other
photographers that I use PC, they all say I need to switch to a Mac.
Thats fine, I will "switch" to a Mac if I need to. I would just like to
know why?
I know that Mac OS has Colorsync which is supposed to be better than
Windows ICM. From what I know about Colorysync, it appears to be critical
in the pre-press world when multiple applications are used before the final
print is made. In my case, I only use Photoshop, so I dont think I would
use Colorsync. That takes me back to the original question: how does
Photoshop ACE interact with the operating system? If the monitor output
leverages off Colorsync or ICM, I understand that there is difference
between the Mac and the PC. Otherwise, I dont see how there is a
difference.
Thanks,
Craig
