Andrew:
I know your involvement with Gretag is a little different than mine so your
experience may be different.
For users like me (typical dumb schlub end user) the upgrade arrived with a
new Hasp4 type dongle which is usable on both Windows and Mac OS 9 and
eventually OS X. The dongle is unprogrammed so the 4.0 app will not function
until it is programmed.
Gretag did not want to double the number of dongles floating around so they
elected to go with an applet that interrogates the older 3.x dongles and
returns a numeric string which essentially reports the license status of
that 3.x dongle. This string is sent to Switzerland and they then send you a
new access key to reprogram the new Hasp4 with. At this point the old 3.1
dongle is stripped. Both dongles have to be present on the USB in order for
this final step to take place.
The instructions that shipped with my upgrade were confusing and
contradictory, and ultimately led to a situation where both my dongles were
useless. Basically the proper steps did not occur in the proper sequence. I
ultimately was hand held through the process by a very nice fellow in
Switzerland. My earlier post was an attempt to recreate that process for
others.
Since you were a beta site my guess is they will simply ship you a fully
functioning 4.0 dongle and you won't have to go through this nonesense. BTW
you are right about the better printer RGB color gamut available with 4.0.
It is definately worth doing the upgrade, and worth the momentary stress and
hassle. Thank you.
Best wishes
Nick
