Hi,

I used to work solely by "the numbers" but that was at a time when 95% of
the prep work I did was for four-color offset web. My results were fairly
successful because very few factors were variable (i.e. the papers, inks,
proofing and printing were generally the same), so "the numbers" had a
consistent meaning. Today, however, in addition to offset prep, I am also
involved in Iris fine art printing and other large format ink-jet output.
Now "the numbers" have different meanings depending on the output (all our
output is sent via CMYK). I print on at least six different papers with two
different ink-sets on the Iris alone. "The numbers" are different for each
one of these paper/ink combinations, and few bear any resemblance to the
"proper" offset press numbers that have been burned into my brain. In this
case I find that working in RGB and using ICC profiles with
calibrated/profiled monitors are lifesavers (especially when re-purposing
files).

I agree that "the numbers" are an important tool when they are applied to a
specific process. But with so many output options the meaning of "the
numbers" becomes confusing. Certainly though, if I tried to print some of
the files separated for the Iris on an offset press, "the numbers" would
indicate that I'd be screwed.
