The Spectrocam prefs allow the following choices, and as Michael Lithgow

The Spectrocam users manual is very vague, suggesting that the Status is

I am attempting to answer my own original question a bit here but since
first posting my query I have learnt that Status E is for European inks, T
for American (I don't know why T either, perhaps simply because the letter A
was already taken by Status A). I know that A and M are the common status
types for conventional densitometers as opposed to Spectrophotometers and I
can only guess that I stands for international and possibly is used by the
Japanese print industry hence the default in the Spectrocam as the most
common use may be reading inkjet patches. DIN is the German standards
organisation so probably doesn't relate to most needs.
Having worked all this out, possibly incorrectly, my tests show it doesn't
make a pinch of difference in relation to reading inkjet patches as the
readings are in Lab and the Status choice only seems to effect the Status
density reading (sounds a little too obvious doesn't it). However this
reading is only visible if chosen in the Spectrocam preferences under the
Colour Space settings.
Hopefully this post will encourage the wiser among us to share their wisdom
on the subject.
