I posted a message to the X-Rite bulletin board after Henrik mentioned that
he'd "not use the DTP41 as is because the built-in white backing cuts
1.5 to 2 steps off the L* channel in the white point." (Best CMYK profiling
software - 5 Feb 2002). I was worried about the DTP-41 because my white
points for newsprint always seemed too dark. I thought I'd post the response
here to clear things up. This is on the bulletin board at

DTP41 White Backing
Posted By: Tom (2/18/2002)
I was told recently on the ColorSync-User's mailing list that the white
backing on the DTP-41 was faulty and should be replaced. Apparently it cuts
1.5 - 2 steps off the L* channel. I was [told] a replacement was available.
Can anyone confirm this? I have noticed that my white points seem to be a
bit darker than they're meant to be, although I thought this was an
illusion.

There is nothing "faulty" about the white backing of the DTP41. In fact
there is some debate from a standards point of view whether anything but
very thin substrates should be measured against white at all. The issue is
further muddied by the fact that many people propose measuring against "self
backing" (multiple sheets of blank similar paper) which can have a huge
variability in L* value. To provide a consistent backing X-Rite offers both
a black and white option to measure against, of which only the black has an
ANSI/ISO specification to follow.
For very thin materials, X-Rite offers an alternate ceramic backing that is
compliant with current proposals for this purpose, and again provides a very
consistent way to measure as opposed to the variability that occurs with
self backing. This alternate backing material can be ordered by your dealer,
or through X-Rite customer service as part number: DTP41-55-KIT.
